It's not just in your head - swearing really does makes pain easier to deal with!

Also, thank you so much for all the birthday wishes in the comments, and on Twitter and Facebook. It was awesome that people remembered. Really made my day Smiling

The title is pretty self explanatory. I'm Brigitte Dale and I'm a burger-earner.

This economy is forcing lots of people who'd finally gotten a place of their own to go back to having a roommate. Make the best of it! P.S.

I swear too much for this to work for me. Sad

Hiya, Brigitte!!! Hope you had a Happy Birthday!

...and now for the Biblical perspective on today's topic:

"Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is profitable according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear... and do not grieve the Spirit of God by Whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

To fess up, it wasn't because I was such a pious individual, but rather because I was surrounded by young Boy Scouts everywhere, that I put the above passage into practice when I nearly ripped off my foot... unless AAAarrgh! is considered swearing!

It's been 343 freakin' days since the Great Ankle Injury. Still no word of sympathy from Lady Brigitte!

I had a long-running bet with one of my older sisters that I wouldn't cuss until I was 21. If I made it, she owed me like $200. I was great until I was 18 or 19 and flew off the road into the woods in a car accident. On the way into the tree, I said "sh*@" about a dozen times. Hahaha, maybe that is why I was miraculously not injured. Smiling

(My sister didn't blame me for that curse word, though, and didn't hold the bet to it. I did, however, decide to curse for the heck of it on my 20th birthday, because I felt like it, and I knew my sister didn't really want to hash up the $$$ the next year.)

When I was growing up, nobody in my family EVER cussed for ANY reason, and I've carried that into my adulthood. So when I recently slammed my car door on a couple of fingers, all I could do was shout, "GEE, I WISH I HADN'T DONE THAT!" Didn't make me feel much better.
That's interesting about cussing during improv performances...I've wondered why so many comedians seem to do that. It seems like only the most talented comedians can make audiences laugh without spewing out long strings of profanities. Now we know why!

Another benefit of incorporating more swearing in your 'fight, or flight' reaction is the possibility of making some extra $$$. A friend of mine had a swear jar and every time she swore, due to an undesirable experience, she'd put money into the swear jar. In the end... I think she made $50.00!!! Everyone start cussing! Wink

When I was a kid my mom would punish me when I cursed by putting Tabasco sauce on my lips as punishment. Ironic that the burning pain could have been eased with more swearing.

My mother's definition of a lady: "Someone who never does anything unintentionally vulgar." That included the occasional Golfing Word, either for effect or in response to hitting her "god DAMNED thumb with the god DAMNED hammer!" It was always shocking, and always funny at the same time.

Another option: Makin' out.

I remember reading about some study a long time ago that showed that stress levels decreased significantly after people had been kissed;they were even specifically studying people who had to give stressful presentations. So, if you're pacing around, freaking out from your maladapted adrenal system, instead of saying things your mother would not be proud of, you should just go convince someone to give you a friendly kiss. Also, if you see somebody falling apart from nerves:...it couldn't hurt.

Or... you could just double the goodness and say, "f*@&! it, let's make out!"

@Cole : Oh nice - I'll have to do a little digging on that research, I like that even better than the swearing technique!

Kissing does more then just decrease stress levels, it fights tooth decay, tones facial muscles and lots of other thing.
