we're doing something different
we've met
Posted Sat, 11/15/2008 - 00:30 — Brigitte DaleLike many people in our generation, I'm better at remembering people's avatars than their names. Here's some tips to help you remember a person's name after meeting them.

What Up, WE?
This environment is SO different. . .
. . . nevermind. it turns out out I am in my kitchen.
In case anyone doesn't get the importance of name remembering, think how, if you were a supervisor or manager in business -- how would you yell at your underlings effectively if you couldn't first know, then butcher, their names. Same in education. A teacher has to learn lots of names to interact, involve, and educate the students. And, of course, yell at them. (I _did_ have one teacher in H.S. who used to throw things, but only at me. Naturally, it made me want to become a teacher.)
Somehow, using one or all the techniques Brigitte mentioned, a person can learn lots of names.
WE, you probably use ACT! or Outlook for contacts, their wives, children, pets, etc. ... but have them in the front of your brain when a meeting is imminent. The brain has amazing capabilities, if one has a bit of confidence in it.
Having said that, I once (long, long ago, in Texas) met a girl whose name I remembered the next day, but couldn't picture her face! ♥ We broke up after one and a half years.
Oddly enough, she looked like Brigitte's picture in iTunes (specifically), and that is why I first watched BD's videos. Funny how the world works, or doesn't. It makes you wonder what comes next. I hope it involves chocolate.

wooo faces!
Coupled with annoying advertisements as I am using them cool. Good advice on the names, because analytical thoughts alone can be inefficent at times and names should be percieved creatively as well. O the elusive snail speaks! Yes! (

Well... I am finally back on line and now and in the SF Bay Area. I have missed seeing your video blog as well as a number of others that I have relied on for information, humor, wit and intelligence. It was like the time I went off of caffeine, cold turkey, after 23 years of non-stop daily high doses. The best thing about reconnecting to the internet was receiving all your blogs one after another. Not only that, but the fact that you are now more than once a week. That took the sting out of the canceling of "Pop Siren" over at Revision3. Sorry, I digress.
So now a comment about your current blog. This one really hit home. An inability to remember names has been the thorn in my side most of my life. Not just new introductions, but people I have known for many years, co-workers, superiors and subordinates, occasionally even family members. For those new it usually never returns. For those I've known well or for long it returns when it is no longer needed. It has embarrassed me, kept me silent, prevented me from participating, and worse, kept me from connecting. I have tried all manor of cure, work-a-round, mental enhancement, mental exercise, memory nemonic, etc, etc, etc... All to no avail. "I have the most ill-regulated memory. It does those things which it ought not to do and leaves undone the things it ought to have done. But it has not yet gone on strike altogether." -Dorothy L. Sayers, "Gaudy Night".
I am aware that I have an extreme case. I have sought professional help on several occasions. They espoused several of the devices you proposed and claim success with many in the past. But, alas, no cure for me. Its not all bad though. I have several work-arounds and devices to assist me, when it is important or necessary, that minimize the embarrassment or even turns it around to make the forgotten feel important. I certainly recommend the suggestions you propose prior to admitting any lapse; however, ultimately I've found that it's been best to just admit my mental lapse and ask their name. At the end of the day honestly is the best policy.
I'm just say'n.
If you did want to remember the name 'Jenny', you could always associate it with a Spinning Jenny - the multi-spool spinning wheel invented by James Hargreaves in Lancashire, England, circa 1764.
Or, you know, not...
Thanks for letting me hide inside. My calcium carbonate shell isn't fireproof, so I was a little paranoid about being outdoors. Sorry about your plant. Where do you keep the beer?
hi brigitte,
I hope your ok with all the fires and stuff going on in california?? If you are near the fires, and this goes for anyone else reading this, here is some practical advice for you digital natives out there.
1. Is the house insurance up to date?
2. Take photos of all your contents with a date and time stamp.
3. Back up all your digital media as it is often not covered by insurance
4. Check your car will start easily and keep some water in there
5. If the fire is coming prepare your home.
* Clear your gutters
* Chop back and water down surrounding trees and shrubs
* Plan for the water going off. This happens all the time as pumping stations go down.
* The safest place in a firestorm is in the house - wait for it to pass. Either go or stay, dont change your mind half way through.
* If your going to evacuate know your escape route and have a second option
* When evacuating be careful, everyone drives like madmen. A lot of accidents happen
* If a fire is close but not threatning, keep an eye on the wind. If the wind starts blowing toward you start preparing.
I was in a very serious fire in Australia a few years back and thought some info might help. Hopefully your at home enjoying a nice coffee and ice cream
I find it easier to remember the name of someone I might want to get to know more and even easier to remember the name of someone I might want to avoid. It's the middle of the roaders that I have trouble with. Was it Mike/Matt/Mark, or on the flipside, Michelle/Maria/Mary? It began with M didn't it? Or there's an M in there somewhere!
If someone has a slightly unusual name it helps the remembering process or even if it's a name that could be spelt a number of ways (Rachel, Rachael etc). This can be used in conjunction with the "saying the person's name back to them" approach. First of all you're saying the person's name and - once they stopped purring like a kitten - ask them to confirm how it's spelt. Not only are you giving the impression you're interested in their name (and them) but also people with an ambiguous name like to have their name spelt correctly. I know I do!
101 Days since the Great Ankle Injury... I've begun physical therapy.
I heard a story about a bride who blanked out about her bridegroom's name, and proceeded at their wedding reception to introduce him with the wrong name (the name of a former boyfriend).
Ladiez..... don't do this!
I'll bet no one has ever had trouble remembering Vice President Cheney's first name after meeting him.

As i felt really awkward telling the person i met only some minutes ago a wrong name, i started to pay attention and to repeat in my mind the name in question, so as to use it when i had an opportunity. It works at least for that meeting. Yes, we are digital natives, we have a RAM memory. I´ll start with method #2 using my hard brain drive.
Your videos get me upside down

That sure is a lot of work just to remember someone's name. Especially since most people we meet we will never see again. And why is it our responsibility to remember other's names? If they want us to remember their name, they should make the effort to help us remember. I'm glad people can't remember names. That way when I screw up and leave the scene, people can't say I did it because they don't remember my name.

Once I met a a girl, she told me her name was Kelly. I was repeating her name to myself so I would remember it. Being quite drunk at the time I'm not sure how I remembered to do that, but also, being quite drunk at the time, when she asked me what my name was(Cole), I was still repeating her name to myself and mixed up the two mental tasks. Subsequently I introduced myself as Coly, which is what she called me from then on.
I always have difficulty remembering names! I work in a tiny store, and we have a lot of repeat customers. People always remember me, but I see so many different people daily, I often forget who was who by the time I see them again. I think I'm going to try a few of your tips.
Sorta random note... avatars are kinda are our faces without a face. At least for those who don't use their actual face! I know I use my little cat picture for my messengers, and just about everything related to my online persona. Maybe we should create a giant avatar collage or something!
Yeah, another episode of DIYSSFDN and a very helpful one, cause I'm really really bad in remembering names. I tend to forget a name seconds after someone has introduced oneself, or, if I get to know more than one person at the same time and i manage to remember their names, I get them mixed up.
So thank you very much, I will try your advice and can hopefully avoid some awkward situations in the future.
Have a nice weekend.
PS: It took forever until the first shot of the video appeared and even longer to finally load the complete video. I don't know, if its because I'm watching from Germany, but I thought I let you know about it.

Thanks Brigitte. I'm horrible at remembering people, hopefully this will help.
