If you don't like the show then don't watch it. It is as easy as that. But you all don't need to criticize it.

Being a gymnast from Romania and now a gymnastics coach for two clubs I am total disappointed with what I can see on this show. Really this does not have too much in common with what actually happens at competitions. The girls are in very bad physical condition to be gymnasts and miss allot of the details in the movements. If they really want to create a good image of what it means be a gymnast and how much sacrifice is really made to become an elite gymnast, why not try consulting with really coaches and gymnasts? This way they can relate the best and most realistic portrayal of how it is suppose to be. I’m sure ABC can find the best people that have a lot in common with gymnastic to use as consultants. They could find people with experiences in gymnast life and the girls training in today’s society. Let the actor’s act, but use real level 10 (minimum) Gymnasts for the gymnastic sequences. By trying to come closer to reality it will enhance the success of this show. I don’t think putting the accent on drama and corruption will help the development of gymnastics in future. The realism of the Gymnasium sounds is the most horrible I’ve ever heard. With more than 15 years in gymnastics, these sounds are so far away from the actual sounds I hear everyday at my Gymnastics Clubs. I could write more then 20 pages comment details about this show. Almost everybody who left comments here had something negative to say and they are right. Maybe all these comments will help? Maybe somehow creative staff will find the motivation to do something better then what I see? Never I will accept somebody destroy something which was build with so many sacrifice. If I was the movie director for sure I start editing probably more then 90 % from this film.

I agree with everyone that this is a sad portrayal of what real gymnastics is like. And the really sad part is that they are using former college gymnasts as their stunt doubles, and are still only showing Level 7 and 8 skills. Ashley Postell and Tasha Schwikert are in there, and both of them could do a better Yurchenko vault than what was shown. It's also annoying to watch the actresses try to set into a skill and then it cuts to the stunt double. Some of those hurdles and sets for back handsprings were just ridiculous. And that leotard? Please, if you have the money to train as an Elite, then you have the money to afford a properly fitting leo. I'll still watch the show, but it's going to be difficult not to want to pick it apart.

gymcoach's picture

I couldn't agree more with the comments about how unrealistic the show is. I hope ABC will read these comments and make some changes. I can't believe GK and AAI are okay with being shown on this show when it is creating such a negative image for the sport.

Ok. Listen. This is a TV SHOW. It doesnt have to be realistic. Yes I know all the gymnists of the world want it to be so but ok then what about Secret Life? I gave birth not long before that shows finale came out and if I'd had that great of a birth than I'd be ready to do it again. ITS A SHOW!!. Take it as you watch it.. Think that gymnists are petty and selfish and what not, or look past it and realize that not everyone is what is shown on tv. Otherwise Greek people cant make up their minds, We have aliens, Teenagers are ALL about sex, and all the other showes that came before this one. Lets not forget 7Th Heaven where EVERYTHING bad that could happen came across that ONE family? This show is for ENTERTAINMENT. Real/Not real. Doesnt matter

lashond's picture

EXACTLY!!!! It's tv! No different than any other show on tv...made purely for entertainment, to watch and enjoy. If it were a documentary then we should look for accuracy and how the life of a gymnast really is, but it is not!

gymgurl17's picture

I think it would've been awesome if they used nastia. I know shawn was on secret life of the american teenager but shawn is focusing on school and nastia had a part in stick it and said she would like to do more acting while shawn had two lines on Secret Life of the American Teenager and was off.

laura_loveXx's picture

people..this is only a sneak peak! the music isn't her floor music..and the bar routines and such were most likely cut short for the preview..their not going to show the whole routine in the preview...wait for the show, don't get so worked up about it...

foreveragymnast's picture

First, I had the same leotard as 'Kaylie Cruz' at my regionals in May. It is beautiful.

Second, I agree. Gymnasts can be any height, weight, any build. I am barely 5'' (barely 13 yrs old.) and a level 9 gymnast. I have a friend who is 5'' 8' (almost 15 yrs old.) and she is the same level as me. Just as good. I also think that we all should be thankful that there is actually a series on TV about gymnastics. I never see anything ANYWHERE public or in the media about gymnastics. That part is exciting. However, this is a television show and it isn't that obvious that its horrible to the untrained eye. Of course, gymnasts like us can pick out the major faults right away but to people who don't spend their whole lives devoted to gymnastics can't really tell that its TOTALLY fake. They think it is amazing what they are 'doing'. If I hadn't spent the last eleven years involved in gymnastics, I would think it was pretty amazing, too.
JUST BE GRATEFUL THAT GYMNASTICS IS ACTUALLY BEING RECOGNIZED BY THE PUBLIC!!!!!!
I think that I will actually watch this show after my practices on Mondays. I'll go from gymnastics to watching teen pregnancy in Secret Life. lol.

Big smile

Okay, everyone that's commenting aobut this show, chill out. You guys are right. It's not even close to the life a real gymnast and the skills aren't as high, but it's tv. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Simple as that.

gymnasticsfreak's picture

Sticking out tongue First off they should have used Shawn Johnson. Seond, y were their beam and bars routine so short? No comment Third, you can't have words in your music. Fourth, that one girl that has her dad as a coach is a brat.

Gymnatics:P

mickeyswimmer45's picture

they shouldve used shawn johnson cause i know she did a scene in secret life...even though it wasnt good acting but it wouldve gotten a lot more people watching and i think it couldve been more realistic

gymmom9's picture

oh my gosh i don't even know what to say. leotards are supposed to be skin tight, not all "baggy" and an elite doing a yerchenko tuck, give me a break. Also NO gymnast would EVER talk to their parents during a meet. and let me ask you, when during a meet would a gymnast be able to get that close to their coach's clipboard to change another girl's board setting. it just doesn't happen. not to mention the fact that the girl who "nailed that dismount" did a layout fly-away. That's level 7!!! This is such a disapointment because i was really looking forward to watching this show after my practices during the week, but now i am angry. this is an insult to gymnasts everywhere.

lashond's picture

I think we're reading into this a bit too much. I am a parent of a competitive gymnast....she's been competing for 8 years and I do agree that based on the clips they are showing, this show is nothing like the real world of artistic gymnastics, but then again it is tv. And as another poster said it's not even a reality show....just another tv drama for entertainment purposes only. I think you will find that in any show for entertainment, its should be viewed as that only! I do agree that it would be nice to have something on tv that represents what the life of a competitive gymnast is really like, this is clearly not that representation. Purely made for tv drama. If you can watch knowing that, it might be a fun show to watch.....if not then it would be hard to watch because you'll compare all the things that arent close to what this life is really like. Same as the movie Stick It....fun movie but definitely not a true representation of artistic gymnastics! I think we'll try watching it, as long as we can watch and not try to pick out everything that is false about it Wink That might be hard to do though!

gymmom9's picture

My daughter has been competing usag for five years and ALL competitions are Olympic order. Who ever heard of vault being after beam? I am afraid that this show, which my daughter and I were excited about, gives a very negative picture of what gymnasts and gymnastics are like. There are two elites at my daughter's gym and I know that neither of them would ever behave in that way.

lfogle01's picture

I haven't done anything with gymastics, but I do agree they should have some real gymnists though. I will say one thing based off of what most people blogged about though is that this show is a drama it's not a reality show. It is realistic fiction, just like the secret life and most of the shows that are on ABC Family. We only saw a few minutes of the show who knows how it's going to continue going. I'm hoping they will capture what it's like to be a real gymnist, but I can't tell off of ten minutes. Hopefully nobody gets mad at what I'm saying since I don't want to offend anyone. I wish those of you who are gymnists reading this the best of luck in your careers and you make it to the olympics someday.

Live life to the fullest!

gymnast_jordan2000's picture

i totally agree with every person. i am gymnast and i dont believe it is as easy or not even like they show it on the show. we do 31 hours a week and we arent even elite and can do better skills than them!! eveything else that was said is right. I was excited to watch the show but now it doesnt seem that good!! and that vault!!! are you kidding me!! a yerchanko isnt the hardest vault and can easily be landed by a level 8. shawn johnson did a layout one with two and a half twist! not even close to the same thing.!!!!

Jordan =]]

cher062's picture

I think the Non-gymnastic family will lilke this and it will make it because of the drama but I think it really doesn't portray a real life gymnastic life of any girl or boy. Competitive gymnastics is time consuming. I have a boy and a girl competing not at elite levels but heck we live at the gym. The drama they show just isn't realistic. I can't imagine when a gymnastic "team" wouldn't have all the same leo and it should fit skin tight not the saggy baggy fit show here. You would never see a gymnast leave the comp area unless they were injured or had to use the bathroom and you would never have a gymnast go to a parent ever either in the stands or in an office. And when would a gymnast at any level fall on a move on a beam and not get back on and redo the move especially at Elite. gymnasts would never change a height on a sheet no matter how much they are hoping they would fall. I just wish a tv show or movie would show real gymnasts. Is there gym drama of course there is, is there gym queens yes but this isn't the right stuff they are showing in this series. I hope I'm wrong but I think its just a teen drama with unrealistic teen issues and some gymnastics thrown in as the base for the drama

Cher

cjack62's picture

cher, the reason they wouldn't redo the skill is if they landed the skill but lost balance after completing it...for simplicity sake, lets say a cartwheel...both feet touch and then the gymnast falls off, don't repeat the skill. If neither foot touches then repeat the skill. Very true though, no baggy leos and the shoulder definition is the biggest give away.

luvgymnastics's picture

This is THE WORST portrayal of elite gymnastics i have ever seen. They are trying to show the hard life of gymnasts, but it is hard in a different way: waking up early to practice, traveling from home, sometimes leaving school. The training and competition is way off in this show. The competitions are NOTHING like this, even qualifiers. These skills are being competed by level 8s, not elites. a yurchenko? tucked? & not even correctly? & she's been to nationals?!? NO. This show is doing nothing other than making the real gymnasts mad because they can't do them justice. I pity these producers because they will lose any reputation they have.

psugymnast's picture

First off I would like to bring attention to my fellow gymnasts, when are leotards ever "baggy" on an elite gymnast? I was a level 10, nationally ranked gymnast and I was doing those 'warm-up' moves when I was 14 and a level 7, you have to be kidding! And where are they competing? A garage? This show is very disappointing. At least Stick It used some real gymnasts. I agree that a gymnast would never be allowed to talk to their parents b/t events are you nuts? My parents would have ruined my day. The only time you will come that close is if you get hurt and your dad carries you off the mat. Its just disappointing, these girls are actresses, there are plenty of gymnasts or former gymnasts who could have played this role much betterl The sneaky nonsense, of changing the board settings, DOES NOT HAPPEN. Gymnasts do not wish injury or cause injury on others, in my 20 yrs of competitive gymnastics it was healthy competition~ and really...did you need to play a trick when all you are doing is an easy tuck suke? Just sad.
I also coached for years, and if my team ever acted in this fashion they would be too sore to get out of bed in the morning. To all the little girls out there, no act like this~ make your own experiences. I dont know what is more sad, the show or me being the age I am, and getting this upset over it. HA I give it one season!

I agree that the portrayal of the gymnasts in this show does not match what the typical female gymnasts looks like it is very rare to find a tall skinny girl doing gymnastics that is competing as an elite gymnasts the last one that I could remember is the russian Slytlana khorkina. I am a gymnast and I am 5'2 1/2 the tallest gymnast that is an elite today is 5'3 or 5'4. I can tell you one thing that between events the gymnasts never go see their parents. The gymnastics constantly watch the other gymnasts and compare their scores with other girls they are competing with and mentally going through each routine in their head so when they perform you do all the skills in the routines.

Amie

gymbrat23's picture

ok yeah. im a competitive gymnast and even though im so excited for this show, it doesnt seem like it could be possible. those girls like dont have the "gymnast body" and thier skils arent even that good to go elite. Level 8 skills arent even half of what you need to be an elite gymnast and the people making this show need to realize that. Some normal poople may now think oh yeah i can do that it is easy to be elite when really it is reallllllly hard and probably one of the hardest sports out there. This need to be alot more realisticc and girls like lauren really wouldnt want someone to do that bad for thier own good. But anyway excited to see the rest of the show!!! <3

ber89's picture

first off im all for promotion for gymnastics. the sport needs it. but this, to me isnt promoting gymnastics. its giving the sport a bad reputation. meaning that gymnast are caddy, theres a ton of drama, and elite gymnasts can succeed with level seven skills. if you want to show case what an elite gymnasts life really is like...well your not gonna ever really know. because they train SEVEN hours a day. and dont get me started on the physic of the girls that are on the show. im sorry but elite gymnast are FIT. i used to be a gymnast and you had to be fit. a fit gymnast is different from a cheerleader or dancer. we have no hips. our shoulders are massive. we are tiny (i have an elite level gymnast as a brother and he isnt tall at all). and six or eight packs are normal. now i know there are gymnast out there who have hips, big boobs, and small shoulders but guess what? they are not elite level. i would rather see a documentary on nastia or any up and coming olympian. to me that is promotion for the sport. show what it really is like.
p.s i have NEVER seen a gymnast throw a bouquet of flowers and stomp off the floor.

So these girls are attempting to be on the national team which means they are supposed to be elite...yet they are performing level 7 and level 8 skills...hmmm, good luck with that.

coachgeo's picture

By the way... what is this secret lies TV show your speaking of with a male gymnast?

robin1103's picture

Puzzled
I like the idea of creating a show about the trials and tribulations of American Gymnastics Team hopefuls,
but I think it is so important to have characters who resemble gymnasts. First of all, they are all very short--even the men--, they are young, and have little girls' bodies with muscular legs. The producers should have sought out girls from all over who are working their tails off right now learning routines and would jump at the chance to apply their talents and skills to a potential hit t.v. series. Having a long history of doing commercials or other t.v. series should not be important. The audience would come to know these new actors. The women the producers chose for this series do not resemble gymnasts in the least. The male actor from "Secret Lives" is a good actor but has the wrong body for a male gymnast.
Male gymnasts have tiny frames, very highly developed shoulders and arms, strong legs, and they are never very tall.

coachgeo's picture

nice try but no. You would be suprised the various body types that compete as would many others stuck on that mindset. They are NOT all petite. Also there are 4 gymnastic sports. Acro Gymnastics has tall muscular base gymnast

Watch College level artistic gymnastics. Some bigggg... gurls and guys on college teams. They GROW UP eventully you know.

Oh.... and I was a 5'8" tall nationaly ranked college level gymnast. Not ranked at the top mind you... but still ranked.

This series though as it shows so far is so way off track and no where remotely like artristic gymnastics. Butttt... they say bad press can be just as good as good press. Will see if BAAAAAADDDDDDDD Press follows the same rule cause this is horrible horrible horrible.

cjack62's picture

I used to train strength and conditioning coach for female gymnasts and they come in all shapes and sizes...some very thick like Shawn Johnson to very thin like Nastia and somewhere in between like Alicia Sacramone. Some gymnasts are less muscular than others depending on their primary muscle fibers. I kind of wish they would have done a reality show following several gymnasts than the soap opera mess this show represents. If my girls acted like these girls, they'ld be running kickin chickins for an hour. Think "Miracle"... The thing I thought was funny was where the girl went and talked to her parents during a meet. Doesn't happen.
