'the middleman' comic-con summarization
Posted Thu, 08/07/2008 - 21:18 — The MiddlemanSan Diego Comic-Con was AWESOME! Not only did I get my picture taken with THE Natalie Morales, but I got to talk to Matt Keeslar and several of the show's writers I hadn't met before.
The events kicked off Thursday, July 24, with a panel featuring showrunner and creator Javier Grillo-Marxuach (aka Maximum Aldwin) and Em Em himself, Matt Keeslar. The full grueling rundown is in the comments of the Comic-Con comment blog, but if you want the important stuff, here are the (SPOILERIFIC) highlights:
1. We started with a video featuring Natalie Morales apologizing for not being there. She was wearing an Interrodroid outfit and introduced clips from this week's episode, as well as an episode, airing in two weeks, featuring Kevin Sorbo, everyone's favorite 'Hercules'!
2. Parts of the third graphic novel will find -- and have found -- their way into the show (remember Ida's FATBOY coffee? FATBOY will play a big part this season), but the storyline of that book will not be translated directly, for several reasons.
3. Also, the finale is called 'The Palindrome Reversal Palindrome' and involves the Middleman's evil 'Mirror Universe,' in which everyone has a pointy goatee.
4. Fan favorite actor Mark Sheppard (from 'Firefly' and 'Battlestar Galactica') will be guest starring in a few episodes near the end of the season.
On Saturday, Natalie showed up for an autograph session. She also did TV Guide's hotlist panel with Javi (as well as Matt Dallas and Jaimie Alexander of 'Kyle XY,' 'BSG' showrunner Ron Moore, and others). And, despite the heavy hitters on the panel, 'The Middleman' came away with
the most fan questions asked!
Besides 'The Middleman,' what are you most upset about missing at Comic-Con -- either because you didn't go, or because you went and didn't make it into panels due to incredibly long lines?

The SDCC panel was awesome. Brought my friend along who, by the end of the panel, vowed to catch up on all of The Middleman episodes. Since then he's become a huge Middlefan, even contemplating dressing as MM for Halloween if he can find the appropriate vintage Eisenhower jacket.
I'm sorry to not have had the opportunity to see or meet Natalie Morales on that Saturday at SDCC and also sorry to have missed out on 4 of the 8 collectible pin giveaways too.
Would love to see a second season of The Middleman and see an even bigger turnout for a MM panel at SDCC next year!
Thanks for all you do and hope to keep The Middleman alive on TV.
It was my own first time attending SDCC. Some of my own additional highlights from the two The Middleman Panels, and from dropping by ABC Family multiple times:
(1) Both Panels that Javi, Matt and Natalie spoke at were packed. The fans like myself love the show, and despite the alure of many other Panels, we wanted to come to these ones for a reason. The show is brilliant, and is being recognized widely as one of the most intelligent on television at the moment. ABC Family acquired a pure gem.
(2) Matt, Natalie, Javi, and Les McClaine were each enthusiastic, fun, and very polite. Matt was trying to find unique Middleman expressions for every single individual in line who sought his autograph -- and the line was lengthy. Both Natalie and Matt were very happy to have their photographs taken with members of the public -- something that I noticed is anything but universal. The few minutes I had with these outstanding actors and writers/artists were among my single favorite highlights of SDCC. I raved about them and the show to my friends.
(3) Natalie received among the most questions at the TV Guide Panel, reflecting that she's attracting a large fan base for good reason. I noted the popularity of her response when she cited "Buffy" as one of her great loves in Sci Fi television prior to auditioning for The Middleman.
(4) As I mentioned, the line for autographs was long. Yet in a show of his own affection for the fans, Javi came out and just "rapped" with several of us in the 30 or so minutes before he and Natalie started signing autographs. I heard several people in the autograph lines comment on how "cool" he was and how much they liked the interaction he showed.
Man I wish I could've been there. I bet it was so awesome! Thanks for this blog, though. Very insightful.
I probably would've spent the majority of my time at the Middleman booths to be honest. Then again the DC[Watchmen woo hoo!!] and Marvel booths would've been nice to visit as well.
How fun! I was wondering what the Middlepresence was like at SDCC.
Awesome. Thanks for the post. I wish I could have made it.
I was one of the lucky people who got to attend the Saturday SDCC panel and it was awesome! (I was even luckier to be in the first row and get some great pictures.) Javi and Natalie clearly love the show and it was great to share that love with them since yes, we LOVE The Middleman!! Keep this show on the air - we need more well written, positive, fun and light-hearted super heroes.
I missed a lot at comic con because it's just so darn tootin' big, as MM might say. I am rather sore at missing Heroes and Lost in favor of BSG, Dollhouse and Fringe. OH well, the con makes it necessary to miss one or two cool things in order to see one or two other cool things. For the Middleman this year, I was really happy to finally see people know of the Middleman that I didn't already know. This was the third year for a Middleman presence, having had Javi and Les at the Viper booth the past two years. But now that it's on TV, others outside of comic geekdom know about it too, and that was really fun. Big shoutout to the other Minions in attendance, especially those experiencing the enormity of comic con for the first time.
