natalie morales interview, part 2
Posted Fri, 06/13/2008 - 08:30 — The MiddlemanIn the first part of our interview with Natalie Morales, the actress who plays Wendy Watson on "The Middleman," she talked about her audition and what she'd like to see packaged with a Wendy action figure. Since then, she's been stewing in our interrogation room while we prepared for part two. Ready?
abcfamily.com: Natalie Morales is a beautiful name, but you're not the top result on web searches for it. Why
not use a variation or a stage name?
Natalie Morales: Actually, I kind of like not being easily found. So I think I'll stick with Natalie Morales. That way, everyone thinks Wendy Watson is also with child on NBC, getting baby supplies sent to her. Free stuff is awesome!
abcfamily.com: On the show, Wendy is a painter. Does your love of photography and music help you channel Wendy more than if you didn't have an artistic side?
Natalie: Definitely. I'm kind of all over the place when it comes to things creative. I want to do everything. I may not do it well, but I still love it. From music, to photography, to painting and drawing. If I could split myself seven different ways and have seven different careers, I would.
Truth is, I've been playing guitar a lot longer than I've been acting. So, yeah, that all comes into play when I think of Wendy. Her art and her expressing herself are super-important to her--as they are to me.
abcfamily.com: How did you get into acting?
Natalie: Well, it all happened absolutely by chance. I wanted to be a criminal lawyer. I really wanted to go to this magnet high school in Miami that had law as a program -- but, alas, you got in by a lottery, and I didn't get picked. I had to go to this other, totally new school, where I didn't know anyone. So I decided to take some summer courses and meet people before the school year started. I signed up for photography and guitar, and the counselor said, 'Oops, sorry. One
girl just took the last space in photography class." So then I said,"OK, I guess I'll take ... uh ... drama." And that was that. Never looked back. My teacher and my friends that year changed my life forever.
abcfamily.com: So that means you started doing theater? What was the transition to TV like?
Natalie: I did start out in theater. It's easy to make the transition, because film and TV are what I always wanted to do. I'm too subtle for theater. My professors would always tell me I had to be louder and bigger. Even in intimate moments. I just couldn't do it. You get to be subtle with a microphone and a camera in your face. Sketch and comedy, however ... the live audience in that will never be replaced by TV or film. That, I miss. Maybe I'll just start doing stand-up for the crew
between takes.
abcfamily.com: Finally, it's time to put you on the spot. We're going to set off a truth bomb and ask you an extremely personal question. For coffee: non-dairy creamer or cow squirt?
Natalie: Definitely some cow squirt. Organic, free-range cow squirt, that is.
abcfamily.com: Very PC of you, Natalie--VERY PC!
All right, folks--thanks for stopping by to check up on the amazing woman behind Wendy Watson. And don't forget that "The Middleman" premieres on ABC Family on Monday, June 16, at 10/9c. Grab a glass of cow squirt, sit back, and let Wendy and the Middleman fight evil ...so you don't have to!
