dear sarah,
Posted Wed, 09/02/2009 - 13:39 — secret life adviceYour Question: I'm a generally a good person and a good girl. I don't lie to my parents. I don't really misbehave. My average in school is 104 and I rank #1. I have to be a physician. And I've never really had any interests in boys until my junior year. The guy's name Mark and I've known him since freshmen year. He's fit, and is really handsome with dimples to match. He's 16 like me and he gets by in the institute with 85s and 90s but a lot of the time, he's a kind of like a bad boy and is a little immature. He actually came to class with a hickey on his neck. I liked him but he found out and he asked me out but I said no because my parents doesn't allow me to date until I'm out of high school. Now he asked me out again and said that he tied to impress me by getting 101 average, taking up music, joining sports teams and club. I didn't know that he was pushing for me so much. I want to say yes so bad but I can't lie to my parents and date him behind their backs. I haven't talked to them about it, but they won't let me date him. They're really protective of me because I've had bone and lung cancer. What should I do? We're both 16. And I really don't want to stray from my studies.
Dear Reader,
The parent-boyfriend battle is almost like a time-honored tradition. I can't tell you how many times I disagreed with my own parents about how old I should be when I started dating and which guys were right for me. Your parents just want to keep you safe. They still think of you as their little girl -- even though you're 16 now, with a totally normal and healthy interest in guys. The fact that you're a lung cancer survivor is incredible! But it probably doesn't lessen their need to keep you close to home. You've all been through a lot, and they want to make sure you're OK.
Start things off slow with Mark. Become friends first and see how things go. By easing into things with him, you can also ease your parents in. If he's your friend first, they'll have a chance to get to know him, and you'll have a chance to see if you're really interested in a relationship. And, you can keep your studies in focus at the same time. Then, if you're ready to take the leap into a more serious relationship, you'll be ready -- and you'll be able to help your parents adjust. Timing and honesty are everything.
Just remember, life is really all about balance. You're smart to think about your long-term priorities, but you also have to follow your heart, and there is a way to do both. Trust yourself, and you'll be just fine.
xxx

don't stray from your studies they are important, but your 16 and must girls do start to date before that so that's a little crazy. if you really like him and he changed just so you'll go out with him i would talk to your parents and tell them he changed just for me and that your 16 years old and tell the dude that your studies come first so he as to except that. that's all i can give ya so hope it helps!!!!
I'm almost exactly the same as you. I'm a good girl, I'm 14, I don't like to lie and don't lie especailly not to my parents( unless its extremely important). I try in school, but I'm allowed to date anyone, but my dad likes to meet them( I haven't really dated anyone).

Ok so I really really really like this guy who happens to be one of my best friends and I've known him my whole entire life our families are really good friends. We don't go to the same school but i see him on weekends with our families. I want to tell him that I like him and I have tried a couple of times but I got to nervous. Any ideas on how to tell him?
Thanks!
what i would do is just straight up tell him how you feel and then see what he says. most of the time it works and the end up liking you!!!
Hey i'm not 16.I'm 13 but my friends say I give REALLY good advice so i'll give it a shot.
What I would is do is let them know ypur ready to have a boyfriend but just to help them think about give them a least three good reasons of why you should have one. Then tell the guy you would love to go out with him.But just dont go and be like the weird girls and fall over your guy just be yourself and stick with your studies.
okay amy,i like this boy but i dont know if he likes me.i also dont know how to realy tell him, what should i do?
ok so your going to think im weird but i didnt start dating till i was 18. if he really likes you like he thinks he does he can wait... like sarah said just be friends.. bring him around your parents as a friend..... let your parents kinda be the judge... if hes a good kid around them the it will kinda be like their ideal... i think everyone should be careful getting into relationships because i was not ready for sex when i started dating and it was pushed upon me.... next thing i knew i was on my own with a baby, just be careful... they give off the bad boy vibe for a reason
ive been dateing since i was in 4th grade n im a sophomore now my mom didnt even care ur parents r really strict n u a teenager let loose get in trouble kiss make out wat evr JUS DONT HAVE SEX N GET KNOCKED UP OBVIOUSLY THAN THEYLL KNOW U WER DATEING LOL but i would say jus go out wit him im n honor student n i still date im still smart!!!!!!
