we're doing something different

ABC Family: Dragon*Con 2008

Dragon*Con 2008

Hey middleguys and middlegals - anyone here going to Dragon*Con in Atlanta Labor Day weekend?

Some fans and I are heading up a "Middleman" panel 5:30pm Saturday Aug. 30th in Marriott A704.

I'm hoping we have a decent turnout. Smiling

OH YEAH - forgot to mention that in the same room I'll be doing "Kyle XY" as well - 8:30pm Friday Aug. 29th.

....but at 70,000+ attendees, it's big enough for me!

Also, considering Middleman just aired this season, didn't get ANY advertising in my area, and maybe not so much in the rest of the country - the one panel they had at Dragoncon for Middleman was actually quite full! I was surprised to see so many people there..it usually takes a few seasons for a panel based on a TV show (that doesn't have any actors as speakers) to start getting filled up.

I think that means that The Middleman is pretty popular!

dragon con?

It's a SciFi/Horror/Comic etc convention. Pretty big one too. Lots of exibitors with many rare hard to find wares. Movies, comics, Toys. Things like that. Celebrity guests are often on hand to disscuss project past and present. The sign autographs for fans. These Conventions usually span the course of a weekend, being Friday-through Sunday.

No more monologuing, or I'll Swiss-cheese you on principle.

kinda like comic con?

syxxgage's picture

Very much so. Although Comic Con is on a much larger scale. Dragon*Con, Chiller Theatre and otheres are definitely smaller, but still lots of fun.

ComicCon is more media driven these days - Dragon*Con is more fan driven.

syxxgage's picture

exactly. Comic Con has alot more promotion from the production companies, publishers and the like. While the smaller cons still have some corporate promotion, alot of it comes from the fans and such.

About 20% of ComicCon attendees dress in costume, about 80% of Dragon*Con attendees dress up. And Comic-Con shuts down at 7pm - D*C goes on all freaking night lmao

And when we say smaller scale we're talking 65,000 poeple instead of 135,000 Big smile

syxxgage's picture

there is a definite lack of cosplay at the cons I attend, but it's not nonexistent. I remember seeing a storm trooper that couldn't have been much bigger than 5 feet tall. Of Course I couldn't resist asking him "Aren't you a little short for a Storm Trooper?". He factually issued me a ticket from the 501st Legion for asking a Storm Trooper that question. I still have that ticket on my Fridge.

The last REALLY BIG con I attended was WizardCon 2003 in Philadelphia.

We get Storm Trooper Elvis who is so famous (among con goers) he has his own fan following and websites. Smiling

that actually looks almost EXACTLY the way WW looks in the comic!

illiara - she was actually hired by Javi that year to be the Viper Comics "booth babe."

Speaker's picture

I sadly don't have the build to pull off Em Em - I WILL however be wearing a !!!! shirt and possibly a Jolly Fats shirt I'm making.

I'm also going as some characters from Mystery Science Theater 3000 - and if you've never heard of MST3k, you should look it up some day. Big smile

theBEST's picture

well i just looked it up. it appears it was cancelled and reruns stoppped airing. guess i wont be able to watch =(

My new name is THEbest794!!

Speaker's picture

I don't know if it was announced yet or not but there's a certain channel that's sadly only on satellite right now that just picked up reruns of it - dunno when it'll start, but a friend of mine told me at comic-con that they sunk the deal.

syxxgage's picture

You can rent some. Most, if not all of the episode are out on DVD. There was even Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie, which is kinda redundant since its really exactly the same as a regular episode.

Rhino just lost MST3k and MST3k has since made a deal with a new company who's going to release even more.

theBEST's picture

oo ok, but i dnt have satellite so i guess i'll just have to try and rent.

I miss Crow and Tom Servo

Trace who was Dr. Forrester and Crow #1 is actually coming and I'm so excited!

At SDCC I watched Mike, Kevin, and Bill Corbett do a live Rifftrax - it was so made of win.

syxxgage's picture

You should check out the new DVD copy of Plan 9 from Outer Space. Mike Nelson does the audio comentary on it. It's hillarious. I won an autographed copy at a recent con.

I got it from the rifftrax site - love it too! Andy they just released the new version with all three of'em on it. (Not DVD - just the MP3)

I LOVE rifftrax. Smiling

syxxgage's picture

Really? All thre on a Plan 9 comentary? They said they never did Plan 9 on MST3K because there was so much dialogue on the film that they couldnt justify doing an episode for it. I'm really supprised. Do you have a link as to where I can find the mp3?

No more monologuing, or I'll Swiss-cheese you on principle.

Speaker's picture

if we can post links without being deleted - people are doing it but I'm not sure if the mods just haven't gotten here yet or not. Smiling

If you google "rifftrax" it's the first hit - most of the riffs are 2-3 dollars or so and the new Plan 9 should be on the front page somewhere - if it's not, click on "catalog."

syxxgage's picture

I'm guessing that providing links aren't a problem as the new forum says it automatically turns a web address into a valid link. I understand your hesitance though. I will google it when I get home and can download it. Looks like I'll be sitting down for another viewing on Plan 9 shortly.

But the old site did it too - those rules may just be standard w/ the new site software.

The MiddlePanel was awesome! To say the least
