Becoming Dead: Chapter 5. (10370)
Posted Sun, 11/08/2009 - 00:03 — Unit7I am like 2 days behind right now... but its a good thing its early on in the month, plenty of time to readjust the daily count and pull a couple all nighters(and day I suppose)
Anyways
Chapter 5.
His hands roamed her body, searching out her most private areas. She straddled him and pulled his shirt off. He looked up at her and smiled. She bent low and kissed him passionately. The touch of his lips against hers was electrifying, the touch of his strong hands on her was indescribable. She let out a low moan, as he began to speed up.
“Oh Monica,” he grunted through the pleasure. Sam froze.
“What did you say?” She screamed. She got off of him and swept up her shirt.
“I said your name,” he said, fumbling with each word. Sam glanced over her shoulder, her eyes wild with rage. She pulled the shirt over and looked around for her pants.
“No, you said Monica.” Sam balled her fists, “Surely not...” she turned to face him. “Monica Bardord?”
“Hey maybe you were hearing what you wanted to hear,” he said, but she could see the defeat in his eyes.
“Yeah, you wish.” Sam found her jeans and tugged them on. “That whole story was a lie wasn't it? You were not staying away because you didn't want to upset me about my...” Sam looked away, the pits of hell would have been a more enjoyable view. “You bastard.”
“It was just one time. Oh like you never cheated on me. I saw the way you look at Brad. Look at me damnit.” Kyle grabbed Sam by the chin and forced her to look at him. She struggled against him but he grabbed tighter. “Yeah you think I didn't notice? All that flirting you do with him in Geometry?”
“I never cheated on you.” She whimpered. “I am not that kind of girl.”
“Oh yeah that's right. Your just the type who uses sex against her mother.” Kyle said letting go. Sam turned away. “You have been using me from the start. Do you really think you are hurting your mother by sleeping with me? Get real.” Sam tried to walk away from him, away from the constant flow of water. When did it become an annoyance? She wondered. Her legs felt like jelly and she fell to the ground. “You don't think I noticed that our first time was just a few days after your mom began her slutty adventures?”
“Why are you doing this to me?” She said. Tears began falling to the ground, “Why are you hurting me?” Kyle looked down at her, his fists just wanting to... he shook the thought from his mind. I am not going to be my father. He walked over to his girlfriend... ex-girlfriend he corrected. He bent down low, and placed a hand on her back. The second it landed, he was on the ground. Sam pressed her bare foot onto his throat. Kyle tried to free himself, but with each attempt she slowly applied pressure. The look in her eyes sent shivers down his spine. Eventually he freed himself. Sam hung her head, watching the tears as they fell and were absorbed by the earth.
“You know what? You can walk home.” He said and turned around. The bushes began to shake, barking filled the late afternoon air. Knocking her back into reality and the present, Sam looked around, her vision still blurred by tears, she could just make out a skinless dog jump out of the bushes and attack Kyle. She wiped the tears away, thinking she was mistaken: A skinless dog? But when her vision cleared she saw Kyle struggling against what could only be described as just that. Its muscles and sinew exposed to the world. Its eyes were wild with rage and hunger. Kyle's hands were around its throat, as its jaw snapped and tore at the air inches from his face.
“Help me damn it!” He shouted. Sam watched as a glob of drool fell into his mouth and spat it back up. It was such a disgusting thing, but enough to freeze the chains on her feet and arms. She searched the small clearing, for anything. The droning of the waterfall filled her ears, obliterating every other sound except the intense beating of her heart. Her eyes landed on a fallen branch. She picked it up. She slammed it against a tree. The branch snapped in half, leaving a sharp edge. She ran to Kyle and with the make shift spear and plunged it into the beast. It let out a sharp howl, and turned its attention to her. Taking the zombie dogs distraction. Kyle wrapped his large hands around its neck and forced it to the ground. The dog felt slimy under his hands, he yanked the make shift spear from Sam, his body and hand holding down the beast. With a simple grunt he plunged the spear into its head. The dog fell lifeless. Sam watched as he stood up, wiping the slime like stuff off on his pants and spat what little drool remained in his mouth. Kyle didn't look at her, didn't give a thanks and just ran towards the parking lot.
“Wait for me!” She shouted, pulling her shoes onto her feet as fast as possible but he was already gone.
Sam walked through the forest, jumping at ever snapping twig and every rustle of leaves high above. She held herself, trying not to scream. Trying to be brave. But what she really felt, was anger. First he cheated on her and called out her name while she they were having sex. She felt used. You were using him this whole time, a sinister voice whispered. She let out a sigh of defeat. Still, there was no reason to leave her behind in a forest that has... she shivered. The image of the dog was to much. The image of that man and the police officer came to her. Could they some how be related? She fished in her pocket for a smoke and her lighter. Coming up empty she looked back the way she came. Great, just great she thought. There was no way in hell she was going to walk back. The lifeless dog creature came to mind and she felt nausea take over. She staggered off the trail a little and threw up, again and again. Adrenaline and fear must have prevented it from happening earlier, but with the adrenaline gone she was without help. She hadn't felt this sick since the morning after her 16th birthday party, the same night she swore she would never get that hammered again. Wiping her mouth clean, and wishing she had a mouthwash or a breath mint. She continued to walk down the path, hoping Kyle hadn't just left her there. The first day of summer had been so good too...
John watched as the same car sped past him, its driver looked like it had a bad case of Road Rage. John looked at the backseat where Boo was snoring peacefully. He smiled and turned his attention back to the road. He made a turn and entered an empty parking lot. A sign reading 'Lanton Camp Ground' was just visible under the coat of dust. His mother would have probably demanded him to stop and dust it off. He pushed the thought away. He sat there, wondering what he was going to do when his bladder knocked. He was hesitant in waking her up, but he knew if he answered the call of nature and she woke up while he was gone.
“5 more minutes,” she said turning over.
“Boo can you be strong for me?” He said. She shot right up, her eyes wide with excitement.
“Sure can!” she said. John smiled.
“I am going to leave you here for a minute, I need to answer nature.” John said. She tilted her head for a moment then her blue eyes went wide.
“No you can't!” she shouted. “Don't leave me please don't.”
“You will be safe, if anything scares you just scream. I will come running.” John picked up the gun and tucked it in his waste band, wishing he had time to take the cops holster. “I promise, I won't let anything hurt you.”
“Promise?” She said.
“Double Pinky Swear.” John crossed his arms and extended his pinky. She mimicked the action and they locked pinkies. Jason had taught him this thing when they were younger. It was a promise that no matter what, you could never break it. As soon as boo was old enough to comprehend it they let her in on the promise. Never once had he broken it, and had no intentions of ever doing so. Boo's body relaxed and she slumped back against the backseat. “It will only be a minute.” John locked the doors and jogged a ways into the forest that surrounded the parking lot. Finding a good tree to take a leak on, not that it mattered, he unzipped his pants and let the stream flow. As he finished several wolves or some canine howled in the distance. It wasn't uncommon for a wolf sighting in the Lanton Forest, but that was a rare occasion. An old legend explained the reason. Failing to remember it he ignored the howling. As the howling died, he heard Boo screaming for him.
Sam made it out of the woods and was filled with joy as she saw the black 67 Chevy Impala sitting in the parking lot. Maybe he wasn't such a bad guy after all. That or maybe one of those dogs ate him, the sinister voice whispered with glee. She went to the passenger side and tried opening the door. It was locked. She cupped her hands to see past the setting suns glare and wondered how long those Burger King wrappers and other fast food wrappings had been there. She went to the drivers side and was locked as well. Angry she pounded the car with her fist. Something in the backseat was stirring, she quickly searched for something, anything she could use as a weapon. She looked back at the backseat and saw a blonde haired girl, no older then 10. Her eyes lit up as her mouth let out the loudest scream she had ever heard. The locked car did nothing to silence it.
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.” Sam stumbled to try and find a way to soothe her. Nothing. Somewhere in the distance she could hear the mutant dogs howl in the distance. Her heart beating faster she felt so exposed. Pulling and yanking at the door she let loose a rapid succession of words hoping the girl would understand, hoping she would help her. Sam looked up over the hood of the car and could feel something advancing closer. A teenage kid, about the same age as her with short dark brown hair came out of the woods. She froze as he raised the gun in front of him.
As he raised the gun, it felt heavy in his hands. He fought control of his arm, he had never pointed a gun at anyone. But Boo needed him, needed to feel safe. He slowly moved closer to the mystery women. He paid close attention to her body, both out of habit and out of concern. She wasn't the most gorgeous women he had seen. Her strawberry blonde hair was a mess, her face covered in sweat and dirt. But she didn't seem like those he had left in town.
“I didn't mean to frighten her,” she backed away from the car, “I thought it was my boyfriend... ex boyfriend.” She said. John's mind flashed back to the guy in the similar car speeding down the highway. He nodded. John moved closer, the trembling in his hand.
“He just dump you here?” John asked, eyes narrowing.
“Hence the 'ex' part in Ex Boyfriend.” She said. “Look I just want to get back home and forget this day ever happened. Besides... there is something seriously wrong in this forest.”
“Probably not much better in town.” John said. He lowered the weapon, but paid close attention to her movements. Anything he didn't like, he would have to react. He killed three people already, don't think the law is going to care if he kills just one more in self defense.
“Gotta be better then mutant dogs.” She stepped closer to the car, John noticed her eyes looking down to where he held the gun. As long as you know I'm in charge... John thought of the howling, could they have come from dogs?
“I see your mutant dogs, and raise you zombie like humans.” John said flatly. Sam did not know what to think, could he be bluffing? Could he be telling the truth? The dead skinless dog proved anything is possible. John put the gun in his waste band and opened the passenger side door. “Its OK Boo, she is just like us.” Boo's terrified expression dissolved into a happy grin. She slowly crawled to the other side of the car and hid low out of sight. John hid a smile as he returned to look at the mystery women. “Names John Blackwood,” John walked around the car and stretched out his hand.
“Samantha Greene.” Sam took his hand and they shook, “But just about everyone just calls me Sam.” John smiled. “Who is?” John followed her line of sight, “Where is?”
“Boo! Did I scare you?” Boo shouted through the window as she jumped up. Sam shrieked and stumbled backwards. Unable to break the momentum she tripped and landed on her behind. John looked from Boo to Sam, and back to Boo. Boo's face looked scared. “I'm sorry!” she flailed against the window trying to get to Sam to help her. John put out his hand and she accepted it. Her hand was warm and smooth. John simply smiled.
“Sorry about Boo,” John said. Sam began dusting off her butt. “She has a habit of trying to scare people. Almost never works, but when it does she gets scared herself.”
“I am not a scared cat.” Sam said. John raised an Eyebrow. “I am just a little shaken, that is all. I was nearly mauled to death!” Not sure what to say, he opened the driver side door and helped Boo out of the car.
“I am so sorry!” She said jumping of the car and embracing Sam in a big hug.
“No problem, just having a bad day. That's all.” Sam put a hand on her blonde head and smiled down at her. “Boo, can you let go now?”
“Who?” Boo said looking up, her face scrunched up trying to understand Sam.
“Boo, that's your name right?” Sam asked. She looked over to John, who was grinning.
“No, my name is Alice...” Boo said.
“Help me?” Sam mouthed to John.
“Boo is a nickname.” John said, trying to stifle his laughter. “Very few people are allowed to call her that. Don't feel cheated though. Not even our parents are allowed to use it. Well they can, its just that she will refuse to answer or even acknowledge you.”
“Alice it is,” Sam said smiling. “Alice, could you please let go, I think your cutting off the circulation to my legs.” Boo let go and got behind the wheel, pretending she was driving. “Just a bit ago... what did you mean by zombies?”
“Well I don't have the foggiest idea what the hell they were... still are.” John told the story of how the cop had tried to kill Boo and him, how all of his neighbors tried the same thing. He went into detail on how they looked. He considered editing the story and leave out how he had killed those people.
“You... killed them?” Sam whispered, her jaw hanging.
“I had no choice!” John shouted, he hated how harsh his voice was but felt he could do helpless to try and sugar coat it. John felt the tears come to his eyes. Slouching against the car, he wondered how long had it been since he had a long cry? He had teared up when his ex broke up with him. Had shed a few tears at his Aunt and Uncles funeral, but stoic Jason said 'they wouldn't want you to cry, but to laugh, dance, and play' Its exactly what they did, had their first taste of whiskey that same night. Only a little. Didn't defuse the situation much with his parents. Seven and ten year olds shouldn't be drinking.
Sam crouched next to him, he looked up at her only just making her out. She laced her fingers with his, and leaned against him. She didn't know why she did it, but realized he needed someone to comfort him.

Awesome, just like always! I loved how the characters in the different "stories" meet up! Gosh, Kyle is an a$$. Haha. I can't wait till Chapter 6! (:
Today I was eating a cupcake when the phone rang. I panicked and stuffed the entire cupcake into my mouth. I still don't know why I did that. MLIA
Yeah Kyle is an arse. Oh well he gets whats coming to him soon enough. Of course it was probably a good thing he was a selfish jerk and left her behind...
Writing Chapter 6 as we speak. It starts off really slow and feels like a giant Info Dump. But I realized I had never actually introduced any of the Unit 7 other then Jason and Sarah. But I needed the words... lol

Lol I think you might have scared off people with one of the grossest ways of spreading zombie infection
Ouch. Dude was a scumbag but this was nasty.
I quite enjoyed this chapter. Always fun to see zombie dogs and characters with flaws. It's interesting to see the characters slowly getting together.
I wonder if there will be anything left of the base when they get there
Also can't wait to see who will kill Zombie Kyle
P.S You forgot the links to the other chapters

Yeah well I think that little punk deserved it. I mean why did he have to go and treat Sam like that. Actually I really liked how that bit played out. You first see Kyle in a very loving and concerned sort of light and then you learn that when confronted with something he will go straight for the jugular(ironicly thats where the dog was going for...) and almost gets physical. Just when you think he is this great perfect boyfriend he just turns out to be a selfish scumbag.
As for the whole drool part, yeah that is pretty gross. But it only seemed to fit. At first I wasn't sure how i was going to interrupt their fight. Thought of having a infected hiker but then I remembered a rather nasty scene in one of the resident evil novels. So I sorta stole the idea. Which works great overall because it shows that the Z Virus can cross species and gives a little foreshadowing of what you might see later on. Also it just shows how dangerous leaving your mouth and eyes unprotected. Have you ever noticed that in movies? No matter how many times you get a headshot or bludgeon a zombie it almost never gets in the eyes or mouth?(not sure realisticly, but in the movies blood and such is just flying) well there is usually that one poor b@stard...
As for the characters. Only a Flawed Character can be Flawless. I don't see why people like flawless characters. Some of my favorite moments in fiction are when a flawed character is able to overcome his problems his fears and takes out the bad guy. Its more satisfying more thrilling.
As for the links... I will put them up sometime later.
I think someone will get a little to much pleasure out of Zombie Kyles death
Also... it su.cks to be on that military base.
And summer was off to such a great start

I liked it as well. Reminded me of that classic Buffy moment
Tell me about it. I mean I get when the infections spreads only through saliva but when add in blood it's almost impossible not to get infected. Now I don't have experience in killing people but I am pretty sure that shooting someone or bludgeoning them to death will cause quite the blood splatter. It makes sense when the main hero is immune like in Resident Evil movies but pretty much everybody else, especially the people fighiting hand to hand should get infected in no time.....
By the way speaking of eyes this reminded me of that scene in 28 days later where what it a Crow or something dropped a...well drop of blood in that guy's eye. That was really unexpected
Tell me about it. I can tolerate a flawless character when he is a secondary one and used as a cliche or something else that doesn't really require any character development . But to ahev any of the main characters without flaws? That's just boring.
That's actually why I recently enjoyed watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Ok well the first reason was of course the sizzling combo of Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis but I was also very impressed that the writers managed to show how flawed both of the characters were instead of making one of them innocent victim while painting the other one as a villain the way most movie do.
Hey maybe we can start a modified deathpool on who kills Zombie Kyle. I bet five internet dollars on Boo
Through the darkness of future past, the magician longs to see, one chance out between two worlds, fire walk with me!
Loved that scene in 28 Days Later. It seemed like everything was perfectly safe, well as safe as a country filled with Rage Victims can get. But he just looks up and a Crow/Raven just drops the tiniest amount of blood. I hope to have a few moments like that in Becoming Dead. Another thing I like about that scene is what I love best about Zombie movies. You say when the time comes you won't hesitate. But when you are faced with it, its not as easy(hopefully anyways) Its even better when you get to know the character. Wait... am I making any sense?
Boo killing Zombie Kyle... I could totally get that to work.
