10 Things I Hate About You: Tv series versus Movie

As an avid watcher of "10 Things I Hate About You" the movie (I have seen it so many times that I downloaded it onto my iPod and I can pretty much recite all the lines by heart) I think that the idea of making it into a tv show (or I should say basing the tv show off of the movie) is a FANtastic idea. My only concern is that it does not stick to the original plot of the movie. I think that it should just explore the movie's plots and actions into more details with conversations and what not. What are your thoughts about this [bold] action that ABC Family is doing?

I THINK prefer the TV series even though I loved the movie.

i saw like three episodes of the show before i was able to find the movie, and i loved the show.
once i saw the movie (which is amazing) i realized that everyone was right, the show isn't like the movie exactly. but i think both are fantastic, and i love the idea of having the same characters in a different setting. they are working really well.
if you dont like the show (im not sure if anyone here doesn't like it) then try to think of the movie and show as two different things tht just happen to have the same name and similar characters. if you dont try to link the show and the movie its easier to appreciate both.
I love both the movie and the show but im glad that the show doesn't completely follow the movie because we don't know exactly whats going to happen before we see it, and i can't wait to see tomorrows episode! Smiling

Guys, the info says, (somewhere), that it is "LOOSELY BASED" on the movie. Technically speaking, these are 2 separate things, a movie and a show. All they did was take the characters and put it them in a stereotypical highschool environment, which is very Disney, but, then again, we all want life to be stereotypical. That way, we'd have all the answers.

"Nice duplicity, Judas." - Kat Stratford.

The movie was good as a MOVIE...but if you try to make it a tv show, it's not going to work. There would be one season...and then they are done. They wouldn't make anything out of it. It's completely not worth it to create a tv show that's only going to be one season long, and if they did try to make it longer ...it would be so drawn out that it'd be incredibly boring. More than likely they are making it 1/2 hour long so they can be closer to the movie and still have more than one season, or two seasons.

I ADORED the movie. Watched it 100 times...so many freaking times. I ADORE this show. Absolutely. I understand why they changed it, a bit. I understand why then went backwards to show more of Bianca, Kat...and why they had them move to the town instead of Cameron move to it. This was to show the younger Kat and Bianca...and also keep Cameron in the show, the lead character basically in the movie.

The characters in themselves...how they are written is PERFECT. Patrick acts like Patrick, Kat is like Kat...Bianca etc. I think the original casts were a better version, but I like the new ones as well. I read somewhere that Cameron was too puppy-doggish/obsessive/too nice/sensitive... compared to the original. I believe that's just the actor, the face. Those nice, sensitive guy faces...there isn't any toughness. Anyway...in the movie...this IS the character. Original Cameron was an obsessive guy...more than likely annoying. We only saw it for an hour and a half, or two hours...so he didn't really stay that obsessive, annoying, needy person that he truly was. I mean coome oon, he meets her and teaches her french even though he doesn't want to. He went up to a guy, scary guy yes...just so he could date a girl who he doesn't know too well. The original Cameron actor has a look that isn't as sensitive-y. That's my take on Cameron.

Though every-time I watch this show...I think of the original characters, and miss them terribly. I still like the show. Though there is one thing I dislike. How they made Chastity such a big character. I mean... I like the thought of Bianca becoming more popular than her. I just try not to think about it.

people would you listen to yourselves? you are being completely brutal! if the only reason you came on here in the first place was to bash the show and all of its supporters then no one really cares what you think! people like me who watch the show simply because we like it and think that its a good show (which it is!) dont watch it 4 people like you! if you like the movie so much more then go watch it!

i'm with crazy~->>

i really like both a lot. but i don't want the show to be that much like the movie because if it is then they will only be able to have one or two seasons.

I love ten things and make it or break it! Smiling

I think the show is all right, except for some terrible dialogue. As for the movie being "a classic that should not be tapered with," it was an ok movie, but not a classic. The Taming of the Shrew, the play that the movie was based on, is a classic that the movie completely screwed with. No offense, but go read the play if you want the real original story, or stop complaining.

Alessandra.'s picture

People need to understand that it will not (thankfully) be exactly like the movie. How could they span an hour and a half movie into a series? Second episode was an improvement from terrible pilot, I'll continue watching.

Cat isn't Julia but has potential. Wasn't expecting Heath, not going to complain. Bianca is a weak actress and looks too young. Cameron is soo awkward I don't even want to see her end up with him, at least in the movie he was a cute awkward, not flat out weird. Joey is...not a jerk. And pretty cute. I'd rather see her with Joey to be honest. Chastity is way bitchier than she is in the movie, but they had to make her the villain for the show's sake. Mandela gained 100 pounds but I really like her.

I guess for a dumbed down teen version of the movie it's not bad. We all knew it wouldn't be like the movie. All I can say is, I do find it enjoyable to watch, and that's all I can ask for.

carma928's picture

this show [filtered word]. why would they make this into a show nearly 10 years after the movie was made. thats like just now making clueless into a tv show. this show is OUT DATED as heck. i mean they are so stuck in the 90's!! not to mention the characters are not nearly as hot as the ones that were in the movie. Puzzled

rfreilich24's picture

i happen to think these characters are much hotter than the ones in the movie! (except cameron!)

play4tara's picture

im glad they arent the same so stop complaining
if it was the same we would know wat happens so i think its a good to not know evan tho i love the movie i love the show 2

michelledabell's picture

yeah people are being such drama queens. they need to remember it's INSPIRED BY not BASED ON.
which means bianca could end up with joey, not cameron like in the movie. who knows? [but hopefully she'll end with cam lol]

Amy: "I didn't find sex that much fun."
Ricky: "Yeah...keep telling yourself that."
"I didn't have fun!"
"I think ya did."
Secret Life- Amy and Ricky
10 Things I Hate About You- Cameron and Bianca
Make it or Break it- Kaylie and Carter

mshrmit's picture

I think they're going to keep the main relationships pretty much the same. It could take much longer for her to realize she should be with Cameron, though, especially since Joey isn't a jerk.

nickel07's picture

i agree with the selected few who that many people are getting to butt hurt at the fact that the show isnt exactly like the movie....i mean, it's a series BASED on the movie. so that means not everything will be the same. (Smiling
seriously, if you are going to whine about how it isnt so great as the movie, then here's an idea: watch the movie! Big smile personally, i think the movie is better than the show so far, but i'm still going to watch the show without complaining why it's not exactly like the movie.

maz_55's picture

i think people are being way to dramatic about this. i mean seriously it's a movie! so they want to make a tv series about it who cares. instead of assuming that it's going to be a huge mess how bout you watch it or give a chance. I mean if the dad from the movie is in the show he must think it's a good idea. Just chill out and stop complaining, because i've seen most of the movie and i loved it and the show is just as good. it's not going to kill anybody if they make a show out of it. and it's not going to stick to the movie exactly because then the show would be over before the 2nd season. so just give it a chance and stop complaining because it's getting really really annoying.

"Now you know how the Earth feels" Kat
"That's funny, typically pretty girls are very good liers" Patrick
"He littered"-Kat "Which apperently triggered some sort of psychotic break"-Patrick

THEbest794's picture

Here's my thoughts: Treat the movie and the show as two completely different vehicles. They are just basing some plots off the movie, they are not simply re-doing it. If they did that, they wouldn't have much room to go would they? So just stop comparing the two and judge the show based on the show alone.

I had never heard of the movie until my sister said the show was based on the movie. I thought the show was supposed to be similar so i watched it on youtube, like right before the first episode. I noticed everything that was wrong with the show, its nothing like the movie. I turned it off before it was over, and i think this show really [filtered word]. I loved the movie when i watched it, it was great. But this show, is totally crap, and doesn't do the movie justice. It should be removed from the channel, and as a common viewer of shows on this channel, i would have to say its one of the worst show abc family has made.
ABC family what were you thinking?

moogoesthecow's picture

10 Things I Hate About You tv series is 10 years late. Anyways, the show isn't that bad. But it's sad and annoying that they even use the movie title for this show and it's just nothing like the movie. Only look-a-like characters and who.. the dad from the movie? Either CHANGE THE TITLE to something else or find the MAIN characters from the movie and let them be in the show (kinda like how they did the tv series for Clueless even though Alicia Silverstone wasn't in the series) and then maybe i'll watch it without having the thought that the series is trying to seriously butcher/maul a perfectly good MOVIE.

lizzieq2's picture

im sorry isnt this show supposed to be based on the movie? because the only similarities that i can see is the names of the characters... and the fact that they got Larry Miller to play the dad again. Joey is not a self obsessed jerk... hes just a pushover with a mean girlfriend. Cameron somehow is friends with Bianca right away. The only characters that have similar personalities are Bianca and Kat. Also if im remembering correctly Cameron came to a new school. This show is terrible and Heath Ledger is turning in his grave right now. If you are gonna try to remake a classic.. at least do it some sort of justice.. but this show is just a joke. I knew it was gonna be terrible ever since i saw the trailer for it a couple months ago. Mad

cathconns's picture

As a huge fan of the movie, I found it frustrating that characters I know and love have been mutated so badly. Joey Donner appears in the tv show as more of a victim of Chastity's wrath than a womanizing, self-absorbed jerk. And what's with the Stratford sisters being new to Padua instead of Cameron? The first few lines of the pilot episode were obviously trying to recreate the hilarious banter between the father and Kat and Bianca seen in the movie, but it came across as trying way too hard. And it looks like they're trying to reach out to fans of Superbad and other awkward nerd rising above circumstances films with a very Michael Cera-esque portrayal of Cameron. The interactions between Kat and Patrick are so contrived and forced that it's almost funny. ABC Family has cut out the driving force of the plot in the movie (aka the paid dating) and now appears to be floundering for a way to bring Kat and Patrick together without it. I give this show an epic fail.

ABC!!! what where you thinking!!! its a classic and you dont screw with the classics!!! duh! If anything base it off the movit like make it or break it... dont do this!!! probably the worst pilot episode Ive seen in a few years!!!

So far the show kinda s*cks. In the movie Julia and Health meet because Health was paid to talk to her but this show Kat just walks up to him. And if I am not mistaken doesn't the same guy who played the dad in the movie the same guy in the show?

longdistancelove16's picture

Making this was such a terrible mistake. This is aimed at teens and preteens who are going to be gushing over how awesome it is and its just not the same as the original movie. The people this is aimed towards don't even have a clue that this is actually a movie made in the 90s. Trust me, my cousins are in middle school and have no idea. This show really irks me. Just play the original movie, it was much better. Mad

I am still undecided as to if I liked it or not. I love the movie, and I agree that Heath Ledger is probably rolling in his grave from the pilot episode of this show. However, with most ABC Family shows, it takes a few episodes to get going. I'll stick around to see if it gets better.
People are saying its too far away from the movie. If they copied the movie, no one would watch it, even if they added more things in, for it would just be like watching a movie over multiple weeks. BORING. If they picked up after the movie, we would complain that the characters are too different, and its not like the movie. We will simply have to see how it plays out to see if it gets any better. I certainly hope it does.

Bring back Kyle XY!
