we're doing something different
Excellent Mid-Season Ender
Posted Mon, 11/02/2009 - 23:17 — graceblue23To those who've expressed disappointment, I have to respectfully disagree. To me this was a quintessential Greek episode, and I found myself laughing out load at several points, and then feeling incredibly sad at others.
First of all, I can understand why people are disappointed not to get more Cap and Case, but I'm actually glad that the finale wasn't focused on them, but broadly dealt with all the arcs so far this chapter. We rebooted the Dale/Rusty dynamic, saw another example of Ashleigh's poor leadership skills, setup new relationships/relationship challenges, and set in motion story arcs for the coming chapter.
Cappie and Casey served as bookends for the chapter and that felt very effective to me, it highlighted their significance to the series at large without being the sole focus of the episode, and they emphasized the tonal shift. We'll have plenty of Cappie/Casey romance and I'm sure drama in the chapters to come, for now we get a taste, and I'm okay with that.
I've already commented briefly on the fire, but I will add that I see no way the secret being an issue between Cappie and Casey. It's really not Casey's secret to share (in as much as it could have major implications for Rebecca), and if anyone can understand keeping a pact, it's going to be Cappie.
There is a lot of goodness to digest, and I've only had one viewing so I'm sure that I'll forget some things, but here goes:
1. Loved how Rusty and Dale "worked" out their issues, we have a return to form for Rusty, and his ability to make emotional sacrifices for the people her cares about. I also loved that we got to experience the battlebot showdown through Calvin's perspective, and also love that it was not the first call back to the pilot.
2. ZBZ's performance at Song Fest, filled the cockles of my Glee-loving heart, and we also got another meta reference with the obnoxious new pledge. We got to hear Amber Stevens sing, which is always awesome, we also got to see Spencer Grammer's dance background come out front, which was pleasant. But, more importantly, I think it worked in comparison to the other dances to show us one of the reason's why ZBZ was the #1 house, and also I liked to see the girls actually doing something to fight for their title back.
3. As for Evan-Rachel-Wooden and his actions tonight, they seem very typical to me. Evan's a challenging character to like, and I've worked hard not to try and see him in terms of black and white, because if ever a character lived in the areas of gray, it's this one, and it's a testament to Jake McDormand to make it so multidimensional.
It doesn't surprise me that Evan is loosing his hold on the house, because we've never seen him exhibit natural leadership skills, like we have with Casey and Cappie, or even Frannie. He's a good team player, but as for a leader in his own right, I'm not convinced. While he's always tried to play the poor-little rich kid card, it's never really worked for him, because at the end of the day, he's willing to pull out the Chambers card to make the path more clear more quickly.
He gave up his trust fund and is having a real hard time living with the consequences of that action. He's felt cut adrift, and I think his pass at Casey last episode, and then his decision to betray the KT's to win back his house are reflective of him doing what he's always done. He likes the path of least resistance - compare that to Rusty, who's a character who always is willing to make the hard choice, now wonder why they don't get along. I can't help but think of when Casey said to Evan that he does have friends that really care about him, but unfortunately it's clear that he's chosen to appease his brothers over trusting these friendships to see him through. Which, is a good dilemma for someone in a show about the Greek system to be embroiled in...it's not the decision I would have made, but then again, I was never part of the Greek system, and never felt forced to choose from one group of friends for another. (Though did it have to include Wade and Jeremy? By the way, I loved Jeremy's Silent Bob moment...one of my many LOL moments).
I liked the comparison between Evan's "devotion" to brotherhood and Cappie's. And, I thought the tonal shift was interesting, specifically for Cappie. His realization at the end that he "lost" four best friends, and also Casey's understanding of what that really meant to him, I thought poignant. I think it's a sign that there is a maturity to their relationship that perhaps wasn't there before. Also, I think it will further Cappie's growth, the inevitable sense of loss, is what comes with growing up, moving out, and moving away...an ending and a beginning, and Cappie is no doubt beginning to feel the end of his KT days, no matter how many more years he stays, it definitely felt like the beginning of the end, and hopefully, that will give him incentive to invest in his relationship with Casey.
Well, it's a good sign of a good episode, because I think I could go on and on and on...can't wait until January!

I have to agree that this was a very good episode (and even I have been highly critical of the show over the last few months). The show was probably the best one of the season. It was well written, funny, and I felt like I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
I was very sad to see so many of the KT's leave though. I liked that fact that they were seen on the show regularly. Familiar faces and all.
What I will say is that I hope the fire thing doesnt extend throughout the whole next season. But I fear that between the fire and the security car damaged, it sets up all the seniors to be possibly expelled (hence their ability to extend to another season??).
i thought that the mid-season finale was realy good! it was very funny and made me not want to miss any of it...I loved the part when cappie and casey were holding hands : ) even though it wasnt all about them the writers put enough in...theres plenty more episodes that they can have them as the main focus and i cant waite..the girls dance was cool..not like some of the ones on the show lol
I think the writers wanted to find a way to put some Casey-Cappie scenes into the episode without taking focus away from everything else that was going on.
Here's my only complaint for the finale:
Don't kill me, but it is based on Cap/Casey. At first, I was disappointed at the little focus they had, but after reading the boards, the need to close out all storylines and create obstacles for next season definitely pose as valid reasons to stray the focus off the newly reunited couple. Having said that, I feel like the approach they did use to their rekindled relationship was a bit off. I loved the opening parallel to the pilot, but the overall tone impressed upon me was two people who had been together for 6 months already, not at all reminiscent of the passionate tension we've seen and has built up over the last three seasons.
Yes, of course, Cappie and Casey were together for a whole year before this so this isn't exactly newfound love, however, their mutual admittance after 3 looooong years of denial of their burning flame, I feel, called for more than just some kissing and cuddling. Not to sound like a slobbering fangirl, but... IT'S CASEY AND CAPPIE FOR GOD'S SAKE!
Even the reactions of Ashleigh and Rusty seemed luke warm. I just felt there should have been... I don't know... more. Anyone else feel the same?
I can understand wanting to see that, and the let down you might feel. I wonder how much of the passion was limited by what they could show on screen, due to the network, because while they let a ton of innuendo through, the on screen physicality is pretty limited to kissing/snuggling (maybe the 10pm timeslot will loosen that up a bit)?
I think there are two ways to approach it, and I personally prefer the low-key take, but I acknowledge that that's just a preference. I'm not too worried about the sexual tension going away, though, because I thought it pretty palpable as they walked hand in hand through the quad. And, I actually liked that after a week of "re-kindling" they were so comfortable with each other, that felt very soul-matey to me!
As for the reaction of others reaction (loved the KT's reaction btw) I think it's based on the fact that pretty much everyone (except Lame-bers) knew it would happen, and it was really only Cappie and Casey who needed convincing. Throughout the chapter there have been little hints at how "over" people were of the will they, won't they: Evan too tired to hear about more drama at the End of the World party, the whole Amphora society already knowing about Casey's relationship drama, and Rebecca's nonplussed verbalization at the reveal.
Say goodnight, Gracie
I wasn't necessarily looking for heated passion, aka sex scenes, but more so just focusing on the way they had Casey and Cappie interacting. To me, they had the aura of a long-term couple, similar to couples in real life who have been dating for so long it seems like they're married. These two just came to their senses, just realizing now that they need to be together (or, at least, finally coming to the same conclusion at the same time), I'd expect with such built up anticipation for the pinnacle moment of last week's stair-kiss, the aftermath would be a little more awe-inspired and fresh, dare I say giddy, as opposed to the comfortable, "it's always been this way" feeling that seemed to come across. The moments were way too vanilla for something we've been grinding our teeth over for three years.
your post did jog my memory about one detail that seemed odd IMO. After the dance, Cappie ran over to Casey and was mocking it a little, saying "teach me, teach me!" Casey laughed and called him "Honey!" as if to say "Honey, stop!" I am 95% sure she said this, and it seemed artificial to me. I know they're not a "new" couple, but they are certainly not at the point where they should be calling each other "honey."
Exactly, it's just not appropriate.
Because of the void of Greek episodes and my newly diagnosed Swine Flu, I've been rewatching the show in its entirety. Oddly, as fanatic as I am, I have yet to go back and review all the episodes in order, and man have I been missing out! The attention grabbers are Casey and Cappie interactions. I never noticed the first time I watched, mainly because the show was brand new and I was a plot-seeker more than seeing the total content, how explicit the innuendos were between each other. Sure, I got the obvious hints, but literally ever conversation reverts back to some sort of double meaning of their relationship. This is what I'm talking about, this relationship they have and had, it's built up so much steam over time, so many feelings hidden and suppressed by both characters, there should have been more. It's the climax in a story, the only exception being that this isn't leading to the resolution and end of the show.
I hate to keep dragging out this comparison since they're obviously two different shows, but when I think of Casey and Cappie, I always draw a line to Luke and Lorelai from Gilmore Girls partially because they had the "will they/won't they?" sexual tension for 4 seasons and also because they're the only sexual tension relationship on TV that I can recall that worked after the tension was addressed and they put the characters together. No, they didn't have a relationship in the past, but they knew each other for years, and upon declaring their feelings for one another, this cute, awkward-ish, fresh relationship became compassionate and easy going, romantic and adorable, but it wasn't out of the starting gate. Basically, after three years of waiting, we finally get the couple we want, and yet its as if there was never any history, you know what I mean?
too funny... I've also bee re-watching the show from the pilot and I would recommend it to ALL fans. All of the innuendo went over my head and it wasn't until "Freshman Daze" (halfway through Season 1) that viewers understand the Casey/Cap relationship - so why WOULD we have paid close attention to their dialog, you know? (Now, it's like watching a whole new show!) This is something the writers probably didn't realize. To them, the innuendo was obvious... but to the rest of us - it meant nothing because we were focused on Case and Evan or Case and Max - Cappie just seemed like a cool party guy. (It's the reason I ended up rooting for Casey and Max! I was originally BUMMED about her dumping Max for Cappie!... until I started re-watching from the beginning!)
I do understand your issue here (although I never watched Gilmore Girls)... but I am going to put faith in the writers and in Spencer and Scott because they've both said they don't want this to be a boring relationship, and I think they will fight for that. Reading the interviews with Spencer and Dilshad, I got the feeling that Casey is making a major decision next chapter - and that there will be some trouble in paradise because Casey is going to want to change Cappie - or she's at least going to want him to think about the future -which he's never been willing to do. We saw a foreshadowing of this when she said, "We're 3 years wiser." and Cappie said, "YOU'RE 3 years wiser." We also see them both saying, "It's going to be different this time," but neither of them have addressed HOW it's going to be different. Honestly, I think the writers were just trying to figure out how to give them a back seat in the finale.. and the easiest way to do that was to just make it seem as if they'd been together for 6 months. I do believe things will heat up again.
haha, how funny! I'm so glad I'm not alone in this
See, I've been a Cappie/Casey champion since the pilot, I got the general underlying tension of their past relationship, but my God, I can't even count on one hand how many references to their relationship I hear in one episode! Take 1.06 "Friday Night Frights", an episode where Casey and Cappie don't even interact, Cappie makes comments to Rusty about how he's burnt out on girls, I can't give you the exact quote, but it was this giant implication of his pining for Casey. Then a Cappie/Casey centric episode like 1.07 "Multiple Choice", literally every comment has some sort of hidden reference to the situation.
The writers NEED to rewatch the show and see what they created in the beginning, it almost feels like a completely different show now, but they can certainly draw on their fundamental beginning principles. The foreshadowing of possible problems is interesting, Karen. Hopefully it won't mess with them too much, but then again, the added drama may bring up old subjects that will make them, and possibly the past, more relevant and interesting. Ugh, this may be the first time in the history of my life that I want January to come, now!
Yep! I just watched Friday Night Frights 2 days ago and picked up on so much more this time for sure. That's probably my least favorite episode because that Destiny/Patty character was so annoying and the epi doesn't offer us much in terms of plot development... but this time around I did catch the references coming from Cappie. (I did love the scene when he kisses her and she says, "I lost 70lbs for THAT??" LOL. Poor Cappie.)
Someone posted this spoiler page that I read today if you want a peek into Chapter 6....BEWARE... it's major spoilage, but I just could not resist.

I agree, seemed like more of a filler episode in terms of C/C, more so building on to the tension between Rebecca and Casey, but not really. Oh poor Cappie, I felt so bad for him after crazy Patty! lol!
Ahh... Spoilers... no!!! I can't do it! I used to be the biggest spoiler junkie on Earth, seriously, it was an obsession. I'm a House fanatic, and I'd literally count down the days until Ausiello Wednesday spoilers were posted. Crappy thing was, it completely killed the show for me and gave me horrific expectations that just left me feeling let down. So, this year, I pledged to be spoiler free, so far so good, and I think it's only best I do it for all shows, ugh! Why do I do this to myself? haha
agreed.
I think "Cap" would have been more appropriate. "Honey" just sounded out of place, weird, and forced.
I see your point, cutapacka... but I have a feeling there will be intoxicating tension between C & C again at some point. Right now, they're in a honeymoon phase. I think that some issues will arise in the next chapter between the two - just to keep us interested and guessing. I am especially curious to see how they handle discussions about the future. Cappie doesn't seem to have any goals and won't be able to graduate on time... but Casey will. Casey will probably have to choose between Cappie and some offer to move elsewhere for grad school or a job. There is plenty of ground to cover in this relationship.
I think the writers just wanted to give the C/C thing a rest for one episode, and give us "just enough" to feel good for 2.5 months while they're off the air. I mean... we deserve that after all the waiting and agony we've been through this chapter.
I also think they left us all wanting MORE. From reading these boards, THAT is apparent. So, the writers did their job... they gave us just enough to leave us wondering what's going to happen. It may not have been as passionate as previous episodes, but I was personally OK with that. These two have given us plenty of passion, and I think there is much more to come.
I think it was a great mid-season finale! The thing is, it was different than all the others.... no real big cliff-hangers or anything. But,I think that's what made it unique. I liked this ending, because it leaves your mind to wonder about many different topics, such as the ones you posted. What will happen with the ZBZ's and the fire?? Will someone come clean? What about Cappie and Evan, Evan and Rebecca? Dale and Rusty still obviously have some issues...they appear to be sorted out, but MAYBE not?! And I loved the ending, it wasn't as Cappie and Casey as I would have wanted it to be, but when she crawled into bed and cuddled with him; I thought that was adorable...but I feel like she may come clean about the fire that they aren't "sure" they caused, but most likely did.
You can -Always- go back to your soulmate...That's what makes them a soulmate*
I definitely agree that I liked that the episode wasn't Casey-Cappie centered. They had some very good scenes together and it was woven in nicely with the rest of the storyline.
I thought they very nicely ended a few storylines but also kept some of them going while foreshadowing some future events.
The Dale/Rusty storyline was very good and I don't think its over by any stretch. We really saw the first hint that Dale is jealous of/resents Rusty somewhat. I hope they don't go the way of Cappie/Evan b/c they are hilarious together, although they are pretty funny when they are fighting one another.
The battle bots stuff was great. A great way to incorporate their feud and the fact that both guys are huge nerds and probably couldn't win a real fight against a 5 year old girl.
I thought Calvin this episode was great, as was Rusty. As you said we see Rusty's character once again, he sacrifices for people he cares about and he's willing to take crap if it means his friend doesn't have to suffer as well. I'm hopeful Dale knows Rusty let him win(I think he does) and stops thinking of him as the joke of the engineering department and realizes what a friend he has.
Not surprised by Evan. We all knew eventually he'd give in to his house and go along with the majority. He's having a hard enough time trying to make ends meet after giving up his trust fund, he doesn't need to lose complete control of, as he said "the only thing he has left." Evan's a character that is definitely shades of gray, but he's also a character that doesn't seem to see every possible solution to every problem. Seems to see the easy way and the hard way, and other than his trust fund, he seems to usually take the easy way.
I was surprised at the final scene between Cappie and Evan, mainly b/c Cappie didn't punch him right when they got to the backyard. Whether Evan meant to get them expelled or not, he betrayed Cappie in a horrible way. 3 of Cappie's brothers were expelled and as Evan said "when its between friends and brothers you choose brothers every time." Evan was right, and their friendship was over b/c Cappie was choosing his brothers over Evan, just as Evan did.
The fire, I'm not so sure about. We'll see heading into next season, although I see a lot of drama ahead for Ashleigh. We saw Fisher with some random girl...probably foreshadowing him cheat or her thinking he's cheating, either way she can't really trust him so he's probably gone. I think Casey and Ashleigh will definitely have problems. Ashleigh wanted to go to the cops and tell them what they did. Casey decided it was better to make a pact and I think they will have problems over the decision next chapter.
Not sure what I think about Rebecca/Evan, although I did notice Cappie's look when he saw Evan and Rebecca talking. I don't think he has feelings for Rebecca, but I also don't think he wants her to be with someone like Evan.
I thought the HSM references were hilarious. Especially the "We're all in this together" line by Casey. Completely ridiculous but still very funny.
Hopefully we'll get a promo or sneak peek sometime soon for the next chapter. January 25th is a loooooooooooong way away.
Excellent and insightful synopsis! I especially like analysis of the Rusty/Evan dichotomy.
I am new here and have watched every epi of Greek (on Hulu). I am obsessed (especially with Cappie!) I've been a lurker on the boards for a week or so. I was Greek in college, and I was a member of the #1 sorority on campus. So much of the show IS accurate (although some of it not).
My one big question after tonight's epi is this: I wonder if Casey will be suspended (or possibly expelled, but that would be too drastic.). I mean... when it's discovered that ZBZ was in the Gamma Psi house (because you KNOW someone will leak this fact)... then the sisters will have no choice but to throw Casey under the bus.. or perhaps Casey steps in front of the bus to save Ash - so to speak -- as she's been known to do.
This would be the perfect revenge for Bex - who could tip off the investigators and could easily blame the candle incident on Casey by making it sound as if she had been merely following Casey's orders under duress. I can already see Bex and Evan plotting this little scheme. Bex could eliminate Casey once and for all (or at least for a little while), which we know will make her happy - despite their "seemingly" amicable relationship of late. Maybe Bex would become ZBZ Prez and would allow Casey to live in the house while on suspension, but without holding office or having a say. Now THAT would be interesting.
How ironic this would be, considering all the talk about Cappie and his lifestyle. Casey suspended for, say 1 semester, in her senior year... this would allow the writers to delay her graduation so that she and Cappie can graduate together!
Anyway....I'm sure I am completely wrong, but I enjoy making predictions just to pass the time until the next chapter begins! =)
I think this would be true if we're still dealing with Rebecca of season 1 and Evan of season 2 (though it would be quiet the drama). I think as far as the fire is concerned, it would be way more problematic for Becks in the long run, since there are other witnesses there that would be able to back up her lighting the candle independently. Also, I don't see Evan as having any residual anger towards Casey, which is what motivated him to help Frannie in season 2.
I agree that I think the real stakes result in Ashleigh's leadership of the house after the fire. Though, while she expressed going to the police, I'm not convinced the queasy look on her face after the pact had as much to do with Casey making the opposite decision, but her own realization that she had no idea how to lead during a crisis. Maybe not, it's certainly possible she'll have problems keeping quiet, or with Casey's decision, because she's a bit of a black and white character when it comes to moral dilemmas (I think she's similar to Rusty in that way).
(Welcome to the obsession, and yes, happiness is defined by all things Cappie!
).
Say goodnight, Gracie
I don't think we'll see any rebecca plots against Casey. They aren't best buds, but they aren't enemies anymore either. Rebecca would also be shunned by the rest of the ZBZ's if/when they found out about her plot to get rid of Casey.
I think we'll see the ZBZ's worrying about what happens when they get caught, I think we'll see people question Ashleigh a lot next chapter and look to Casey, which will cause some problems between them.
I think the only problems Casey and Rebecca will have is that their bf's(Cappie and Evan) will be feuding.
I just read this in the interview with Dilshad Vadsaria (actress who plays Bex):
She said, "You might not like Rebecca next season. I'm mad at her."
I have a feeling.....we might see evil Bex again, and I believe her resentment of Casey -- while buried in Chapter 5 - could resurface in Chapter 6. I still feel that she's hungry for power. We'll see!
