ABC Family: PhantomRegiment OT: Question to anyone who voted(not about who you voted for)

OT: Question to anyone who voted(not about who you voted for)

Did anyone get polled in the exit poll? I didn't even see anyone doing that at my polling place.

PhantomRegiment's picture

Huh. Well that is very interesting. I mean, I know all of us don't make up a huge demographic, but I heard one in five or so gets exit polled. Interesting... very interesting...

This board isn't a statitistically accurate sample size. We have maybe 20 members who were voted, compared to the millions across the US. You would need hundreds of people in your sample population to get an accurate reflection of the overall average.

Yeah. Smiling I was just curious what it entailed.

They pick a polling place and wait outside, asking people as they come out if they would be willing to participate in an exit poll. If the person says yes, they go to a nearby trailer or a booth. In it are small private workstations. They are given a slip of paper to check off how they voted, some demographics (age group, gender, etc) and their attitudes about the candidates/issues. (Ex: "Do you feel () will lower taxes or raise them?") The voter completes it (no names or ID) and drop it in a box. Then they tally it by entering it into a computer which sends the results off to the pollsters. Takes only a few minutes.

They do this outside polling stations rather than use the phone surveys popular a few years ago. That keeps liars like me from saying they already voted and giving the wrong candidate, lol.

The American Association for Public Opinion Research (aapor) has a great description of the process on their website. Search for "aapor exit poll"

Another note: many of the board members voted early or by absentee ballot. There are no real exit polls for those situations - the exit polls are only done on Election Day.

Huh. That's pretty interesting. I heard they were no longer allowed to post the exit polls early because people got voter apathy when they heard their state's exit polls. Which would probably explain why I didn't see any on the news.

Discouraging voter apathy makes sense. We were watching the returns on TV and they had a ninety-second countdown running on the screen, showing when California and a few other states' polls would close. Instantly, as the counter reached zero, they announced the exit poll results. We laughed and yelled "Happy New Year!" roflol

Just to clarify, there are no exit polls for people who vote by mail, absentee ballots, or "early polling." For example, I voted on Halloween. No one was conducting exit polls at that time; they only do it on Election Day itself.

No, but I saw a tv camera talking to some people. And, I would have proudly and loudly answered them.

Oh, I read above, then that is not an exit poll. I thought it was those irritating reporters. Ha ha. No, I have never been polled.

The exit polls are sponsored by the Associated Press and other news agencies - they combined resources so they'd be consistent in their reporting and save a little money.

They RARELY set up exit polls at out-of-the-way polling places. It had to be convenient for the crews to reach (meaning, near the highway so they wouldn't get lost) and have a large number of voters. My first two polling sites always had a news crew and people doing exit polls. My polling site changed when they redistricted parts of NYC about six years ago and the school was off the beaten path and hard to get to unless you knew the neighborhood. No reporters, not even the local newspaper, and definitely no exit polls.

So, the smaller towns and such do not get polled. That explains much.

That would explain a lot. My polling place was relatively small. There weren't even any lines.

Did you want to be exit-polled?
